We are a team of 3 artists living across the globe and remotely recording the greatest best friend story ever told!
We’ve been doing this together since 2018, and our greatest goal is to tell incredible, visual cinematic stories, to collaboratively build worlds together, and to spread the superpowered magic of friendship through comedy and narrative.
We’ve built an incredible community behind the show, and these people have sustained us and each other through the whirlwind of 2020 and millions of everyday life problems. They are a big part of why we make this show.
Making these stories has grown me as a person, fullstop. This has been a second fulltime job since I joined in 2019. I’ve learned a ton of skills, and I’ve become more adaptable, resilient, and bold than I ever could have imagined.
Because of this show I have made incredible things, we stay in the top 100 on the improv charts, we perform on stage at conventions like London Comic-Con and PAX East, we’re creating our own game system, we’ve built community on multiple platforms, and we’re getting ready to create a book. I’m so damn proud of this show and the people that I make it with.
Our audience truly heed the call. At the end of the day our show is about the deep arcane power of friendship and camaraderie above all things- and we know our flock.
They’re the ones that stay after at cons and come up to us. They join our discord family, they send us their ideas. They’re with us in the stories. I can’t tell you that they are categorically different from any other type of audio consumer- but they are OURS, and we can clock them anywhere.
They see themselves in the characters in the show, and we see ourselves in them. That’s why we all keep coming back.
We are telling a collaborative fictional story together with immersive sound design and improvisational comedy. We are the only three people touching this thing, and the story we’re telling has kept us going for years.
We’ve got a human bear, a sentient jellyfish in a synthetic body, and their whole found family of misfits and stragglers traveling the galaxy in a spaceship called R.E.E.S.E. They aren’t the heroes you expected, but dangit, they’re who showed up. In order to maintain the random element of this game, we do not script the show.
We are interacting together in an improvisational fashion and building the story as we go.
We are also employing our own “game system” that gives us mechanical elements to interact with and allows a dice rolling property that occasionally puts us in positions that we would not have chosen for ourselves.
Our show requires critical thinking, fast problem solving, collaboration, wit, and deep imagination. And what kind of topics do we cover? Well. Anything from casino heists, to infiltrating an alien factory, to psychic warfare with a sentient fungal system, to country witticisms from our very own weapons expert, Cleo.
Hi Backwater Bastards listeners! This week, we’re bringing you an episode of another show we think you’ll love: Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode!!
Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is the latest actual play narrative fantasy series from Geek & Sundry in partnership with Realm. Using the popular TTRPG Dungeons & Dragons, Goblin Mode tells an ever-evolving improvised story full of magic, monsters, and mayhem.
Goblin Mode is not your traditional fantasy story. These aren’t the mighty warriors who would be called to a tavern by a mysterious stranger. Rather, these characters would be mere crossbow fodder for a group of actual intrepid heroes.
Lead by storyteller Amy Vorpahl and cast members Jason Nguyen, Danielle Radford, and Dan Casey, Goblin Mode tells the tale of a trio of hapless minions – a goblin and two skeletons – toiling their days away in the service of an evil necromancer.
When a band of treasure-hungry “heroes” attack the dungeon they once called home, these poor unfortunate souls wind up trapped in a pit. By the time the dust settles, everyone they knew is dead, their old lives are gone, and their home is under new management. Will they seek vengeance? Will they realize there’s more to life than the Cave Allegory they lived in? Will they become the hope the world needs to stop its impending doom? Find out for yourself with the very first episode of Goblin Mode.
Sagas of Sundry: Goblin Mode is available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever fine podcasts are served.
